The HTC Desire S is best seen as an evolving step from the previous year's Desire, rather than as a completely different species. Not much has changed, but the changes are improvements at least (which sadly is not always the case with a supposed upgrade). So what's changed, what's stayed the same, and is it actually any good?

More than You Could Desire?

To skip to the end: yes, it's a good phone. Very good. We were a fan of the Desire and were glad to see that they hadn't changed too much. The user interface for instance, remains excellent. HTC is one of the few manufacturers who have actually made to improve upon the basic Android system. That's one of the differences from the original Desire in fact, as the Desire S has what was then the latest Android 2.3 Gingerbread system (since been surpassed of course). The improvements with HTC's proprietary Sense 2.2 technology are small but effective. For instance the quick settings feature set in to the notifications bar at the top is a great addition, as is the simple genius of being able to silence an incoming call just by turning the phone over. The little things which don't sound like much actually considerably increase the pleasure of using this phone.

Other aspects which have remained the same from the original Desire are the screen, which is the same 3.7 inches with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels, which to be fair is still good and provides crisp pictures and graphics. If you are looking for something better than that though then you could check out HTC Desire HD deals and get a 4.2 inch HD display.

The processing power of the Desire S stays the same with a 1 GHz processor, although the speed does increase with the upgrade to 768 RAM. Now that there are dual core processors coming out this kind of processing power no longer stands up to the very best out there, but it's more than enough for the vast majority of tasks.

One of the most impressive differences comes in the physical design of the phone. The chassis is made from just a single piece of aluminium, in a unibody design. This makes it feel very solid and classy (access to the battery and sim is available through a small plastic cover which doesn't detract from the feel of solidity).

Web browsing is fast, and with the pre-installed Flash support there's no problem watching videos on the web. The intuitive pinch to zoom feature is also included. No complaints there. The camera is slightly disappointing because it hasn't been upgraded from the 5 megapixel outing on the original Desire. Although you can now record 720p HD video, which is a welcome upgrade. Also, there's a camera on the front of the phone for video-call capabilities (which comes with with the Android Gingerbread OS).

To Upgrade or Not to Upgrade?

If you already have the HTC Desire then the changes made to the HTC Desire S will probably not be significant enough to tempt you to shell out for the upgrades. On the other hand if you're looking for phone deals on a user friendly Android, and you don't need the very top processing power, then it's definitely worth checking out HTC Desire S monthly contract deals. With the BlackBerry Torch 9860 a bold move has been made away from the traditional BlackBerry design. You will find no Qwerty keyboard, in fact no physical keyboard of any kind. There are a few buttons at the bottom of the phone, and there's still an optical trackpad too, but this is very much a touchscreen phone. So, is it a contender to the iPhone and Android platforms? What will BlackBerry fans think? Let's investigate.

The Basics

Let's start with the basics and say that, basically, this is a very nice phone. The design is sleek and slender, and although at 12mm thick it's more bulky than most out there, it really doesn't feel it. In contrast to the straight lines and hard edges of the iPhone, BlackBerry have gone for curves and rounded edges, making it a pleasure to hold.

Okay, how about the operating system? It comes with BlackBerry OS 7, which is a vast improvement on previous incarnations. It's responsive and well designed, with different compartments for different functions, making it easy to find what you want in a hurry, and easy to customise as well. With a single-core 1.2 GHz processor it's plenty smooth as long as you're only doing one thing at a time, but try doing much more than that and expect the phone to slow down. There's also 2.5GB of internal storage (which is a lot), but doesn't come with a microSD card so if you intend to download music and watch videos, that's going to have to be a quick addition.

The screen is clear and crisp, and stands up well to the best Android and iPhone offerings. With a resolution of only 400 x 800 pixels (compared to the iPhone 4's 640 x 960) you might not think it would, but it really does. The screen is bright and the colours are nice and bold. The 3.7 inch screen is plenty big enough as well. So, is it really a contender with iPhones and Androids?

BlackBerry v Android v iPhone

Eeeehhhh, well... it depends. One of the best things about the Android and iPhone are the massive and ever expanding app stores, in effect allowing you the chance of a minor upgrade every time a new app comes out that you like. Or to totally overhaul the way you use your phone. And while the BlackBerry Torch 9860 comes with pre-installed apps, allowing you to do things like listen to music and watch videos, and there is an app store (called BlackBerry App World) it really doesn't compare to the Android or iPhone library and it probably never will.

That, in effect, is the major downfall for the BlackBerry Torch 9860, and it's a shame because otherwise it would be a truly excellent phone. It is, if you don't need copious amounts of apps. If you're a BlackBerry fan and you're really not bothered about being able to play the latest game on your phone then it's definitely worth a look.

BlackBerry for Business

BlackBerry made its name, of course, by being a business friendly phone. That little keyboard makes emailing easy and fast for a lot of people. The BlackBerry Torch 9860 doesn't have that of course, so is it servicing the core BlackBerry fan base?

Well, not if you really want that keyboard. However there's still the BlackBerry Messenger service which is fast and reliable. Plus you have a little LED above the display which flashes when you've received a message, useful for if you are in a business meeting and have to have your phone on silent.

Summing Up

With the big screen there's plenty of room for an on-screen keyboard to be just as good as the physical keys, but if you really want that Qwerty keyboard then this isn't the phone for you. And if you need the vast and ever-increasing library of apps available from an Android or an iPhone then it would be better to check out something like SamsungGalaxy S II deals or iPhone deals.

On the other hand if you love what BlackBerrys have to offer and can do without the physical keyboard and vast arrays of apps, it's definitely worth having a look at BlackBerry Torch 9860 contract deals to see if you can be tempted by the impressively low priced phone deals on offer for a device of unquestionable quality.

There is a metallic frame around the phone to protect the screen further and the hard plastic cover gives it more durability. 1500 mAh battery, standby up to 750 h (2G) / up to 576 h (3G) and talk time up to 13 h 30 min (2G) / up to 6 h 30 min (3G). The primary camera is 5 MP, 2592 x 1944 pixels, autofocus and the secondary is VGA. The video quality is superb. 8 GB/16GB storage, 512 MB RAM, 2GB ROM and the external storage can be expandable up to 32 GB. The dotted design at the back of the phone makes it look good. The volume control button, lock key, the camera button, and the ports for charging and headphone pin is designed conveniently which makes getting used to the phone very easy.

The three buttons on the bottom – two are touch sensitive and one is a physical button, such combination seems rather odd. The firmware (Android 2.2.1 Froyo) seems faulty. For a phone the device seems a little large. People who are fond of taking good pictures will certainly not be interested in this phone. Without flash it is impossible to take pictures at night. The camera might be 5 mp and the picture quality is also good but due to the lack of flash it is useless to large range of customers.

Orange San Francisco Review

The Orange San Francisco is a great device for those people who want a smart phone on a budget.  You're not going to get the highest processing power, the camera's not  the very best and, yes if you want to be able to play all of the latest games then this is not going to be the one for you.  However, if you want a stylish, robust and smooth smart phone then you need not look any further.

The Feel

When it comes to smart phones, one of the most important things about them is the feel.  They're so much more than just a device to make phone calls with.  You have to think about things like, how do they feel in your hand?  How responsive is the screen to your touch?  If this is wrong then it really doesn't matter how much processing power there is or how pretty it looks, you're not going to be able to get much out of the phone.

In this aspect the Orange San Francisco excels because although the price is low it really doesn't feel like it when you hold it in your hand.  It feels nice and hefty, although not heavy - it might have some weight to it but it's nice and slim and will slip nicely in to your pocket.

The screen is another great feature of this phone.  At 3.5 inches it's a nice and large screen and has a good resolution, at 480x800 pixels.  It's nice and crisp and clear. You can slide back and forth between the different pages with just a flick of the finger, the way it was designed.  It's not overly sensitive but neither does it require a heavy hand.  It is truly the goldilocks of budget android phones, it's just right.

Orange Apps

That having been said though, there are a few things that are a bit irritating about the phone.  One of these are the Orange apps which are pre-installed.  The problem is that you can't remove them and they take up quite a bit of memory so after you've had some time to accumulate some apps you may well wish that there was some way to get rid of these Orange apps if you're not using them.  And you never know, you might find them useful, but to be honest there are usually better versions of the same sort of thing that you can get for free at the android app store.

Also, the Orange home screen is not to everyone's taste, but that can easily be replaced with the standard android display so really nothing to worry about the.  The most annoying part of it is probably the game demos they've put on there which you can't remove and which you have to pay for if you want the full version.

So yeah, Orange might be concerned about not spoiling movies but it seems that they're not beyond shoe horning in a few unnecessary extras on their phones.  But we really shouldn't complain too much, it's really only a minor irritation and should not detract from the fact that for budged android phones, the Orange San Francisco is still one of the best that you can get.

Orange San Francisco Hardware

Most of the software on an android can be replaced of course (other than what we've already mentioned) so we won't spend too much more time on that.  The keyboard's okay, as are the text messaging and email facilities.  Nothing special.  But if you prefer something else you're going to have plenty of choice at the Android app store, mostly for free.  Or you might have to pay a few extra pounds for the very best but a lot of that is down to personal preference and how you want to use the phone.

When it comes to the hardware, it's hard to complain too much considering the price.  It's really not fair to compare it to the iPhone or some high-end Android like the Samsung Galaxy S.  Most importantly, as we've already mentioned, the screen is large and it's responsive so that's a major plus.

As for everything else, it works well enough.  The camera, for instance, takes pictures of perfectly reasonable quality.  Although there doesn't seem to be a flash.  We've looked pretty hard for it and we can't find it, but we may be wrong about that.  Anyone finding the flash, please send us a message of how to get to it. 

Also, the wi-fi has an a somewhat annoying habit of cutting out every time the phone goes in to standby mode.  Although that is not necessarily a feature across the range, we might have just been unlucky with this particular phone.

The battery lasts a good long while though.  As well as wi-fi it has 3G capablilities as well as GPS and there's a connection for a 3.5mm jack for headphones.

Overall

This phone might be cheap but it's also serious and it's not going to fall apart any time soon.  The screen is superb and with the Android 2.1 system, although a little old, it will still play most games.  There are of course better android phones on the market, there were when it came out and there certainly are now.  Indeed, it now has a younger brother in the San Francisco II.  However if you're looking for a solid smart phone on the cheap, this is still a contender.
