As you can see from the specs sheet, Nokia X2 is a mid range S40 based phone, with a brushed aluminum back cover that wins hearts and minds, the stereo speakers are very nice and provide a loud crisp sound for both your favorite music or radio shows, the micro SD card is hot swappable and accessible, even the camera seems to be from a high end phone, all in all, in my old school book, with X2 we have a winner if you’re not touched by the smartphone hype.

The retail box is modest, Nokia X2 comes in a small package that contains the usual charger, the headphones and a complementary 2 GB micro SD card. This time you don’t get an USB cable, Nokia tries to keep the price down with the X2.
The Nokia X2 has 111 x 47 x 13.3 mm and weighs 81 grams, the perfect dimensions for a candy bar phone, with a 2.2 inch screen, the phone sits perfectly in hand, is easy to operate and you can hardly feel it in your jeans pocket.
Even if it’s a mid range phone for a tight budget, Nokia X2 is very well built, it doesn’t have that cheap look other phones have, especially the brushed aluminum back cover with the Nokia logo embossed looks excellent.

The display is a 2.2” QVGA, nothing to write home about, it’s a modest display with good brightness and contrast, the viewing angles are acceptable for such device, also the sunlight legibility.
Below the screen we find a D-pad, two soft keys and the two call keys and further down, the usual 12 key alphanumeric keypad, the keys are big enough and pretty hard to press, X2 is not a texting machine, it wasn’t its main purpose anyway.

On the left there are 3 dedicated music keys, the main feature of Nokia X2, they are ergonomically placed and big enough, they control both the music player and the radio. On the top of the phone we find a welcomed 3.5 mm audio jack, the 2 mm charger plug and the micro USB port protected by a plastic lid, this one serves for charging purposes too, along with data transfers.
On the metal back cover, already praised, the most notable presence is the 5 megapixels camera lens featuring a LED flash; here we find also the stereo speakers, the back of the Nokia X2 features a curvy shape so the speakers sound pretty good even if you place the phone on a flat surface, this means good engineering, typical for Nokia, folks.

The battery is an 860 mAh Li-Ion BL-C4 quoted at up to 624 hours of stand-by, up to 13 hours and 30 minutes of talk-time and up to 27 hours of music playback. Except for the brushed aluminum back cover, Nokia X2 is made of plastic, of good quality though, the assembly of the phone raises no suspicion, it’s a long lasting device.
Nokia X2’s OS is S40, the 6th edition software, it’s been sold in billions and I think is familiar for any earthling, the UI is simple and fairly intuitive so you can get going right away, you don’t need special tips to use the Nokia X2.
Being your average dumb phone, there is no multitasking, of course, but thanks to the dedicated music keys you can change the track and if there’s an incoming call, the app will be paused while you take it, that’s a nice feature.

The phonebook is nothing special either, the usual Nokia interface, it can store a huge amount of contacts, around 2000, adding a contact is simple and straightforward – the phone asks for number, first and last name and that’s it, you can also assign different ringtones to each contact.
In terms of telephony, Nokia X2 is quite a performer, the in call sound quality is crisp  and the signal reception works well in all areas, being a dumb phone you don’t get smart dial, neither voice dial, to be franc, I never used that in a phone anyway.

In typical Nokia tradition, the X2 is capable of handling all the common message types including SMS, MMS, as well as flash and audio messages and there’s easy email handling too. The email client is ok too, it supports multiple accounts and even SSL, along with POP3, SMTP, and IMAP4 protocols, also the interface is very user friendly and easy to set up.

The audio player is excellent, it has a decent interface and great features, in terms of functionality it performs very well in any situation, it’s controlled either via the dedicated touch keys or the D-pad. Songs can be filtered by artist, album and genre. The player handles AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, MP3, WMA, AMR-NB. You also get a nice equalizer which has both presets and can be customized, along with a nice feature called Stereo Widening. The stereo speakers perform quite well, this truly is a music oriented device.

Nokia X2 comes with an excellent FM radio with RDS which has the coolest feature, very sensitive built-in antenna – no need to plug in the headphones for the radio to work.
The video player is simple and easy to use, you can’t expect miracles from a 2.2 inch screen device, the X2 supports only MP4 and 3GP files but then again, this is not your usual multimedia player.
As for audio quality output, X2 performs great, as expected, the sound is clean and with no distortions, listening to music on both headphones and speakers is a pleasure.

The 5 megapixels camera is a fixed focus one, the maximum image resolution is 2592x1944 pixels. The LED flash doubles as a torch, the camera takes decent pictures but overall, is a mediocre one, don’t expect anything special in this department.
As for video recording, X2 captures clips on QVGA resolution at 20 fps, enough said, they’re good for MMS purposes and that’s about it.
Connectivity is not impressive also, you get you get quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP, along with the micro USB port and the hot swappable micro SD card. You get no GPS, no WI-FI.
The web browser is Opera Mini, the traditional app for the S40 series, the small screen of low resolution is not your best choice for web browsing, yet the phone performs reasonably well on the internet, there aren’t any problems browsing even complex pages.
The organizer on X2 is business oriented, offering a large number of time management applications with nice features and a user-friendly interface, it even has a Facebook app and a  Search application  that offers Google Search or Bing Search.

On Ovi Store you can find many apps, including games and video content. The phone itself comes loaded with many games onboard, like Diamond Rush or Sokoban, all of them are full versions.

All in all, X2 is a nice all rounder which excels in the music department and business apps, the stereo speakers and the FM radio are the most noticeably features, they perform excellent and are very useful for commuters, and I can honestly say that Nokia X 2 offers a lot for its price.
